In this video there is a Discourse mismatch between the librarian and the blonde woman. As soon as the blonde woman walks into the library and begins to talk it is clear that she does not fit into the "library" Discourse. She is asking for the wrong thing, saying it in the wrong way, and her personality does not fit the "library" type. Even when she tries to fake the Discourse by whispering she still is not able to control the "library" Discourse in a believable manner.

  1. This was a really interesting commercial for Mercedes-Benz to put out. There is this underlying message here that their vehicles aren't for "dumb blondes" like the one in the library trying to order lunch. This sets up two surface level discourses, one of people who usually go to the library and one of people who have no place in a library because they probably would have trouble even reading a book. The core argument being made here is that the Mercedes brand isn't for idiots. This argument really sets the brand apart from the everyday vehicle and creates a higher and more exclusive product.
